Season’s greeting folks! Here is a re-work on the original funky-jazz track recorded in 1969-1970 by “Kool & The Gang – Give it Up” CMAN Edit. This song has been widely sampled most noteably by Eric B & Rakim’s late 80’s/early 90’s breakers anthem “Don’t Sweat The Technique (check out the 2023 Remaster version here). The early and original Kool and the Gang’s pre-disco work in the early to mid-late 70’s is musicianship at it’s finest and timeless in my opinion. Tracks like NT, Duji and so many other lesser known ones (before the band crossed over into “Get Down On It” commercial territory) is a digger’s delight, filled with incredibly funky, horn-laid, jazz tipped textured goodness and sometimes psychedelic feels. This most recent rework is a classic example of the raw and authentic unpolished jazz-funk they served up in that era (much like Earth Wind and Fire in the early days.
For this particular CMAN Edit, as always i’ve designed it for DJs to play out with friendly intros, breaks and outros for easy mixing. I’ve done my best to keep the authenticity and soul of the track whilst making it accessible and familiar with an extra nod to Eric B and Rakim’s remake and the classic horn loops that will be no doubt familiar.
It’s been over a year since I’ve made a new edit track, so I’m happy to get something down while i have a few days off. I’ve spent the last week since i’ve finished work tooling up and reacquiainting myself with the production software and and newer production techniques and new hardware and services – so lots more to come in the future.
Piggybacking of my most played track on Soundcloud, you should find this lil gem works in warm up sets and environments , or where vibe setting is what it’s about. Also works as a nice transition, if want to steer in or out of boom bap style of east coast 90s hip hop.
